Pool Resurfacing vs. Replastering vs. Retiling: Explained

Clear definitions of pool resurfacing, replastering, and retiling — what each covers, what they cost, and which you actually need.

These three terms get used interchangeably in the pool industry, even though they describe very different work. Understanding the difference matters because getting the wrong quote (or the wrong work) can waste thousands of dollars.

Retiling

What it covers: replacing the tile on your pool — waterline, walls, steps, or accents.

Does NOT cover: the interior plaster/pebble surface or coping.

Cost range: $2,500-$20,000 depending on scope (waterline only vs. full pool).

When you need it: loose, cracked, missing, or calcified tile. The pool interior surface is independent of tile and not affected.

Typical timeline: 3-10 days.

Replastering

What it covers: removing and replacing the interior plaster surface of the pool. Traditional white or color-tinted plaster.

Does NOT cover: tile, coping, or deck.

Cost range: $4,500-$6,500 for a standard pool.

When you need it: rough texture, plaster flaking, surface etching, or visible stains that won’t wash off.

Service life: 8-12 years in Orlando.

Typical timeline: 7-10 days.

Resurfacing (the umbrella term)

What it covers: replacing the interior pool surface with ANY finish — plaster, quartz (aggregate blend), pebble (exposed aggregate), or premium finishes like Pebble Sheen / Hydrazzo.

Does NOT cover: tile or coping (unless bundled).

Cost range: $4,500-$12,000+ depending on finish.

When you need it: same signs as replastering — rough texture, etching, staining.

Service life: 8-25 years depending on finish selected.

Typical timeline: 7-14 days.

So all replastering is resurfacing, but not all resurfacing is replastering. Resurfacing with pebble or quartz is a step up from basic replaster.

When to combine them

These three projects are often bundled for a good reason: the pool has to be drained for any of them. Combining saves significantly on drain, prep, and refill costs.

Common bundles:

  • Retile + resurface ($10,000-$18,000) — most common mid-life pool refresh. Waterline tile + new pebble finish.
  • Retile + resurface + coping ($20,000-$35,000) — covers everything at the pool edge. Typical for 15-20 year old pools.
  • Full remodel ($30,000-$60,000+) — adds deck, equipment, sometimes feature additions.

The right quote for each

When you’re getting quotes, make sure contractors specify:

  • For retile: tile selection, number of linear feet, substrate prep scope
  • For replaster/resurface: finish type, surface prep scope, cure/startup chemistry included
  • For combos: line-item pricing so you can see what each part costs
