Pool Resurfacing vs Pool Retiling

Pool Resurfacing vs. Retiling: Which Does Your Pool Need?

Clear comparison of pool resurfacing vs retiling. Different jobs, different costs, different results. Here's how to know which your Orlando pool needs.

These are two completely different jobs that address two different parts of your pool. Confusing them costs homeowners money — either by fixing the wrong thing or by doing two separate projects when one bundled project would’ve been cheaper.

What each one actually is

Resurfacing = replacing the interior finish of the pool (plaster, pebble, quartz). This is the surface you TOUCH — the walls and floor of the pool below the waterline. It has nothing to do with tile.

Retiling = replacing the tile on your pool — waterline band, step tile, mosaic accents, or (rarely) full wall tile. Tile sits ON TOP of the surface.

They’re independent systems. You can resurface without retiling, and retile without resurfacing.

When to resurface only

  • Pool interior feels rough, catches swimsuits
  • Plaster is flaking, etched, or heavily stained
  • Surface is past its service life (8-12 years for plaster, 12-15 for quartz)
  • Tile is still in good shape

When to retile only

  • Waterline tile is loose, cracked, or missing
  • Heavy calcium buildup on tile (bead blast first, retile if bond has failed)
  • You want a visual refresh (new glass or mosaic tile)
  • Interior surface still has years of life left

When to do both (most common for 15+ year pools)

In Orlando, if your pool is 15+ years old and the waterline tile is failing, there’s a very high chance the interior surface is also near end-of-life. Bundling tile + resurface in one project saves 15-25% vs. doing them separately because:

  • One drain, not two
  • One mobilization, not two
  • Substrate prep overlaps
  • Refill and startup chemistry done once

The “do both” bundle typically runs $10,000-$18,000 for waterline retile + pebble resurface on a standard Orlando residential pool.

How to tell what your pool needs

  • Tap the tile — hollow sound = bond failure = retile needed
  • Run your hand on the wall — rough = resurface needed
  • Look at the waterline — heavy calcium, missing grout, cracks = tile attention needed
  • Check your pool’s age — 10-12 years: likely surface only. 15+: likely both.

Our recommendation

If only your tile is failing → retile. If only your surface is rough/stained → resurface. If both → bundle them (saves 15-25% vs. separate projects). Most Orlando pools over 15 years need both.
