What Is Bead Blasting?
Bead blasting removes calcium deposits and stains from pool tile using glass beads. Learn how it works and why it's ideal for Florida pools.
What Is Bead Blasting?
Bead blasting is a pool tile cleaning method that uses compressed air to propel fine glass beads at the tile surface, removing calcium deposits, mineral scale, algae stains, and other buildup. It is a form of abrasive blasting specifically calibrated for pool tile, using softer media than sandblasting to clean without damaging the tile glaze or surrounding pool finish.
How Bead Blasting Works
The process uses specialized equipment that feeds small glass bead media into a high-pressure air stream. A trained technician directs this stream at the tile surface from a controlled distance and angle. The glass beads impact the deposits and break them away from the tile without scratching or etching the underlying surface.
Key aspects of the process:
- Media: Recycled glass beads, typically 40 to 60 mesh size, softer than the tile surface but harder than calcium deposits
- Pressure: Adjusted based on the tile material and the severity of buildup, usually between 40 and 80 PSI
- Water level: The pool is typically lowered 6 to 12 inches below the waterline tile to expose the full tile band
- Duration: Most residential pools can be completed in 2 to 4 hours depending on the size and degree of buildup
Bead Blasting vs. Other Cleaning Methods
Pool tile cleaning methods fall on a spectrum from gentle to aggressive:
- Chemical cleaning: Uses acid or alkaline solutions to dissolve deposits. Effective for light buildup but slow and limited on heavy scale.
- Pressure washing: Uses water pressure alone. Often insufficient for hardened calcium.
- Bead blasting: The middle ground — removes heavy deposits without tile damage. The industry standard for professional pool tile cleaning.
- Sandblasting: Uses silica sand or similar hard media. Too aggressive for most pool tile and can damage glazed surfaces.
Bead blasting has largely replaced sandblasting in the professional pool tile cleaning industry because it achieves similar results with significantly less risk to the tile surface.
Why Bead Blasting Matters in Central Florida
Central Florida’s water supply is naturally high in calcium and minerals. This mineral-rich water means pool tile in the Orlando, Kissimmee, and surrounding areas accumulates calcium deposits faster than pools in regions with softer water. White, crusty calcium buildup along the waterline is one of the most common aesthetic issues pool owners face here.
Left untreated, calcium deposits harden over time and become increasingly difficult to remove. What starts as a thin white film can grow into thick, rock-like scale that bonds chemically to the tile surface. At that stage, manual scrubbing and store-bought cleaners are ineffective, and professional bead blasting becomes the practical solution.
When to Schedule Bead Blasting
Most Central Florida pools benefit from professional tile cleaning every 2 to 3 years, depending on water chemistry maintenance and pool usage. Signs that bead blasting is needed include visible white or gray scale on the waterline tile, rough texture on tile surfaces that were once smooth, and discoloration that does not respond to chemical treatment.
